Bertha "Marie" Shrum

Bertha "Marie" Shrum, 94, of Modoc, Indiana peacefully crossed over Jordan to be with Jesus Tuesday, December 26, 2023 at St. Vincent Hospital after suffering a massive stroke seven days prior. Born January 19, 1929 in Tracy City, Tennessee to the late Pete and Abby (Coffelt) Nunley, in 1953 her and her husband Harley moved to Indiana.

Marie was a precious and Godly woman who always put others above herself. Her home was not only open to family and friends, but also to many strangers who became friends. She took in the needy, helped them get on their feet or as long as they needed to stay and always invited them to church and introduced them to her Jesus. Attending church, serving the Lord, and singing songs for Jesus was at the forefront of her life. She often referred to Jesus as “her master” and would frequently say, “what would the master have me to do?”

Additionally, she was a loving mother and grandmother to many, but also a homemaker; enjoying cooking, sewing, cleaning, organizing, gardening and canning. Above all, Marie loved to spend time with her family; children, brothers, sisters, grand children and extended family.

Left to cherish her loving memory are her four children, Glenda (John) Anderson of Signal Mtn., Tennessee, Ronnie Shrum of Modoc, Charlotte (Jack) Guffey of Losantville and Stephen Shrum of Modoc; grandchildren, Jack Pemberton of Benha, Egypt, Geneva Pemberton of Atlanta, Georgia, Randy Ring of Richmond, Angela Heinrich of Losantville, Melissa (Arlis) Fields of Modoc, Mary Jo Thornbro of Hagerstown, Christina Kellogg of Blountsville, Joshua (Kelly) Guffey of Modoc, Tory Shrum and Morgan Shrum, both of Richmond; numerous great and great-great grandchildren; siblings, Joe “Rudolph” (Hazel) Nunley of Modoc, JW (Judy) Nunley of Losantville, Eddie Mae Vincent of Mooreland, Paul (Tracy) Nunley of Mooreland, Stanley (Teresa) Nunley of Greenfield; sister-in-law, Judy Nunley of Huntsville; several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband, Harley Shrum; daughter, Katherine Leona; son, Ralph Eugene; sister, Louise Carnes; and brother, Francis Nunley.

Services will be held at 1:00 pm Saturday, December 30, 2023 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle with Paul Lawson officiating. Burial will follow at Mooreland Cemetery.
