H. Eugene “Gene†Painter, age 89, of New Castle, passed away Thursday, May 20, 2010 at Stonebrooke Rehabilitation Center in New Castle. He was born January 28, 1921 in Spiceland to the late Myron and Ruth (Holloway) Painter.
He was a 1939 graduate of Spiceland High School. Gene retired from Draper Inc. after over 50 years of service. He lived on the same farm in Spiceland his entire life until moving to Raintree Square. He enjoyed raising horses, traveling, woodworking and gardening and was a part time farmer. A birthright Quaker, he was a member of First Friends Meeting in New Castle and also a member of Spiceland Alumni Association.
Survivors include two sons, Donald (wife, Eleanor) Painter of New Castle and Dr. Robert (wife, Becky) Painter of Indianapolis; four grandchildren, Melissa Painter-Stevey of Sunman, IN, Megan (husband, Chris) Stilwell of New Castle, Marcus (wife, Carrie) Painter of W. Lafayette, Mary Painter of Indianapolis; three great grandchildren, Hayley Painter, Cormac Stilwell and Nola Painter.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Painter in 2004; sister, Anita Everhart.
Services will be at 2:00 p.m. Monday, May 24, 2010 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle with Curt Shaw officiating. Burial will follow in Circle Grove Cemetery in Spiceland. Friends may call from 12:00 p.m.-2:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be given to Spiceland Alumni Association with envelopes available at the funeral home.
