Joseph “Joe” R. Shelley, 77, of New Castle passed away Sunday December 10, 2023, after an extended illness. He was born October 22, 1946, in New Castle, Indiana to the late James and Martha (Smith) Shelley.
Joe graduated from New Castle Chrysler High School in 1964. At age 17 he enlisted in the United States Army to defend our country. Joe served in the Vietnam War as a Combat Engineer battalion, he oversaw operations, intelligence, and logistics to assist the Commander. He then became a supply Sergeant for the Army. He was discharged from the United States Army in 1968. Joe worked at the New Castle post office as a mail carrier for 35 years.
His hobbies include, bowling, and was an enthusiast golfer. Joe was a super fan of the Purdue Boilermakers. He was a die-hard Cincinnati Reds fan. Joe bowled in several bowling leagues. He was a finalist in the bowler of the year tournament for several years. Joe and his daughter (Beth) played in a scotch doubles tournament where they became the champions. When Joe golfed, he was the champion several times of the Henry County open golf tournaments. He traveled to several states, golfing in tournaments. He loved going to bluegrass festivals/concerts. Joe also traveled to many counties within the state and traveled to other states to enjoy the festivals. He appreciated spending time with his cat “Buddy” as he watched his sports channels and completed his sudoku puzzles.
Survivors include daughter Beth Shelley; son, Josh (Wife: Daisy) Shelley; granddaughter, Cora Shelley; bother, Dave (Wife: Deborah) Shelley; sister, Viola (Husband: Gedham) Sultan; along with several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be on Wednesday, December 27, 2023, from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle. Services will be on Thursday December 28, 2023, at 12:00 pm at the funeral home with burial to follow at Batson Cemetery.
