Richard Erickson, 92, of New Castle passed away unexpectedly Thursday, December 29, 2011, at Henry County Hospital. He was born September 26, 1919 in Owatonna, MN, a son of the late Hans and Cecilia (Pellstring) Erickson.
A veteran of the U.S. Army, he proudly served his country during World War II, and was awarded the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal, American Theater Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and World War II Victory Medal. He retired from Beatrice Foods (Meadow Gold) in New Castle and Muncie. Richard was an avid woodworker, and crafted several pieces of beautiful furniture. He was a member of St. Anne Catholic Church in New Castle for many years.
He is survived by three children, Richard L. (wife, Susan) Erickson of Carmel, Elizabeth (husband, Andy) Towe of Waterton Park, Alberta, Canada, and David (wife, Denise) Erickson of Carpinteria, CA; two grandchildren, Ian Erickson and his son Kyle of Carpinteria, CA, and Kyle (wife, Lacey) Erickson and their children, Jayden and Mason of Missoula, MT; a sister, Betty Goudy of Columbus, OH; several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Nelma (Corder) Erickson in 1999; sisters, Annie, Mary, and Katie. Richard was one of triplets, and was preceded in death by his two triplet brothers, Robert in World War II and one at birth; also by brothers Hans Jr. and Bernard.
Graveside services will be at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 4, 2012 at St. Anne Cemetery. There will be no public visitation. Memorial contributions may be given to the St. Anne Catholic Church Building Fund, 1904 Broad Street, New Castle, IN 47362. Online condolences may be expressed at
