Richard L. “Dick” Swim, 87, a lifelong resident of New Castle passed away Wednesday, September 13, 2023 at Stonebrooke Rehabilitation Center in New Castle. He was born on November 17, 1935 in New Castle a son of the late James Albert and Esta Mae (Brayton) Swim.
Dick was a 1954 graduate of New Castle High School and retired from Delco Remy in Anderson following over 44 years of service. During his employment at Delco Remy, Dick was a committeeman with the U.A. W. Local 662 in Anderson. He was proud of the accomplishments that he was involved with over his years of service in order to help the quality of life for his co-workers. Some of Dick’s involvement included negotiating national contracts for GM workers and traveling to Japan in order to help with this achievement. In 1992, Dick received the Walter Reuther Distinguished Service Award that reflected his commitment to his efforts with the U.A.W.
Given all the time and effort spent with the Union and Delco Remy, Dick’s proudest and biggest interest was his family. He deeply loved his family and spending time with them. He enjoyed camping and many of the family vacations over the years included camping. Dick also enjoyed time out on the water just fishing.
Dick is survived by his wife of 68 years, Jackie Swim of New Castle; children, Greg Swim of New Castle and Jeff (Deb) Swim of McCordsville; grandchildren, Scott (Andrea) Swim of McCordsville and Olivia (Brian) Ivanson of Fishers; great grandchildren, Beckett Swim, Evie Brewer, Owen Swim, Violet Ivanson, Eliza Ivanson and Dean Ivanson; brother, Robert (Margaret) Swim of New Castle; sister, MaryJane Jones of New Castle.
In addition to his parents, Dick was preceded in death by his brothers, Gene and Paul Swim; sister, Doris Penticuff.
The Swim family would like to give a heart felt thank you to the nursing staff at Stonebrooke Rehabilitation Center for the caring and compassionate care given to not only Dick, but their entire family.
Services will be held at 1:00pm Monday, September 18, 2023 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle with Pastor Danny Gulden officiating. Burial will follow in South Mound Cemetery.
