Robert Eugene Herbert, 89, a resident of New Castle, went peacefully to heaven Tuesday, May 23, 2023 at Heritage House in New Castle. He was born February 24, 1934 in Henry County to the late William and Mary (Moore) Herbert.
Bob retired from General Motors Corp. in 2002 after 39 years of service. Following retirement, he worked at Ace Hardware in New Castle. An accomplished carpenter, Bob remodeled many houses in his younger years. Bob was an active member of the First Church of the Nazarene in New Castle where he and his wife Jean served as leaders of the Joy Club for 9 1/2 years. He was an usher, greeter and served on the "Others" committee. Bob received the Distinguished Service Award from his church. He went on 3 work crusades to Mexico and Haiti with the Oriental Mission Society. He enjoyed fishing, golfing and traveling but especially loved looking after his six grandchildren.
Bob leaves to cherish his memory two daughters, Kathy Grace (Clyde) Powers of New Castle and Debbie Kay (Rocky) Alspaugh of Columbia, TN; a son, Michael Eugene (Karen) Herbert of Ft. Wayne; grandchildren, Lori (Brent) Lucas of New Castle, Lisa (Jay) Richmond of Indianapolis, Ryan (Jen) Alspaugh of Thompson’s Station, TN, Reid Alspaugh of Columbia, TN, Megan (Bill) Waters of Laotto, IN and Rachel (Daniel) Gschwend of Ft. Wayne; great grandchildren, Sarah Grace (DJ) Shumaker, Jacob Riley Lucas, Addison Jean and Ella Katherine Richmond, Jasper Arlo and Willow Reagan Alspaugh, Leonardo Vaughne Waters, Warren Oliver Waters and Charlotte Amelia Gschwend; a brother, Richard (Ina) Herbert of New Castle, nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by his wife of over 66 years, Norma "Jean" Herbert, whom he married August 23, 1952.
Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, May 30, 2023 at the First Church of the Nazarene in New Castle with Pastor Mark Herbkersman officiating. Burial will follow at Lewisville Cemetery. Visitation will be frtom 4-7 P.M. Monday, May 29 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle. Memorial contributions may be given to the World Gospel Mission, P.O.
