Sterlie Roy Dishman, 84, an involved member of the New Castle community passed away Friday, November 24, 2023, at Henry Community Health. Born on November 1, 1939, in Slickford, Kentucky, he was the son of the late Oakley and Ola Dishman.
A skilled cabinetmaker, Sterlie retired in 2004 after 42 years of service from Gentry’s Cabinet Shop in Anderson, Indiana. He was a former member of the Greensboro Masonic Lodge 175, New Castle York Rite Knights Templar, and a lifelong member of the Knights of Pythias in New Castle, Indiana. Devoted to his lifelong faith in Jesus, Sterlie was an attendee of Sunnyside Church of God.
In his earlier years, he cherished camping and quality time with his family, especially his wife and two daughters. As his family grew, he enjoyed teaching his granddaughter and great-grandson about life. Sterlie’s well known warm embraces and comforting presence were his way of expressing a love that went beyond words.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 62 years, Norma (Mastin) Dishman, whom he married on February 3, 1962; two daughters, Crystal Benson (fiancé, Darryl Gadberry) of Noblesville and Melinda Dishman of New Castle; granddaughter, Devann (husband, George) Varela and great-grandson, Grayson Roy Varela of Austin, Texas; four sisters-in-law Elsie, Libby, Alice, and Rose Mary Mastin; nephews Rick (Deb) Davis, Dale (Connie) Craig, Denny Craig, Dean Dishman, of New Castle, Rod Carender, Tim Carender of Arizona; nieces, Helen Bell, Shelia Marion, of New Castle, Sammie Carender, Arizona.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Cledith (Pat) and Cecil Dishman; four sisters, Ina (Dallas) Craig, Glenna (Earl) Davis, Gladys (Frank) Harding and Vena (Fred) Shanks; nephews, Ronald Davis, Terry Dishman, Dennis Craig and Joey Bell; niece Susan Gail Dishman; mother-in-law and father-in-law Herb and Margie Mastin; brothers-in-law, Herb, Jr., John (Vi), Jim, Jerry (Marlene), Clyde (Arvella), Clifford and Larry Mastin; sisters-in-law, Jane (Ralph) Estelle and Josephine (Virgil) Walters.
The Dishman family would like to extend their gratitude and appreciation to the doctors, nurses, and all hospital staff. Their dedicated care not only ensured Sterlie received the best medical attention but also provided unwavering support to our family during this challenging time.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, November 29, 2023, at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle, Indiana from 11:00 AM until the start of the services at 12:45 PM with the Knights of Pythias ceremony. Following the service, funeral proceedings will commence with Pastor Paul Davis officiating. Private graveside services for the immediate family will be conducted at a later time.
