Alan L Miller

December 16, 1958 — August 14, 2012

Alan L. Miller, 53, of Shirley, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, August 14, 2012 at Hancock Regional Hospital after a three and a half year battle with lung cancer. Alan was born in Madison County on December 16, 1958 the son of Arthur L. Miller (Daddy), companion Marna Surber, and Rosalie Brashear Sisson (Mother), companion Philip Doughty.

Alan lived all of his life in Shirley and graduated from Eastern Hancock in 1977 where he played basketball and was a proud member of FFA. He attended Anderson Ivy-Tech where he received his service technician license. Alan worked at Harvest Land Co-Op. He enjoyed 33 years in the propane business and his favorite part of the job was customer service, where he never met a stranger. Alan was an accomplished woodworker at “Papoo’s Workshop” (yes, he did let the grandkids pick the name). He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, hiking, tractor pulling and spending time with his family and friends; but most importantly he loved being Papoo to his three grandchildren.

Left to cherish his memories includes his loving wife of 22 years: Kathy Black-Miller; two children: Shawn Bowling-Thurston (Steve) and Scott Bowling (Kari); three grandchildren: Emily Thurston, Jared Thurston, and Skylar Bowling; a sister: Brenda Revolt; brothers: Greg Miller and Sean Sisson. He is the grandson of Helen (Reger) Davis. Alan had several special aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and great nieces.

Alan was preceded in death by his grandparents: Arthur L. Miller, Sr., Raymond and Elouise (Smith) Brashear; in-laws: Virl and Pruda Black; a grandson: Nicholas Thurston; uncle: Phillip Brashear; two nephews: Tom Owsley and Randy Black.
