Archie Slettvet

Archie Eugene Slettvet, age 86, of New Castle, passed away Monday, February 22, 2010 in his home while surrounded by his loving family due to an extended illness. He was born June 6, 1923 in Genesis (Cumberland County) Tennessee, a son of the late Arthur Leonard and Ella Marie (Severson) Slettvet.

Archie lived in Genesis, Tennessee for thirteen years before his family moved to New Castle. After his retirement, he moved to Stillwell (Adair County) Oklahoma. While there, he established the Volunteer Fire Department and was on the Board of the AMVETS. He was a member of the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Sallisaw, Oklahoma. After fourteen years, he left his ranch, The Pine Arrow Ranch and moved back to New Castle, due to health issues.

From 1943 to 1946, he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, serving in the Submarine service. While in the Atlantic, he served on the submarine SSO-3, and in the Pacific, he served on the Carbonero Submarine SSO. From 1948 to 1950, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps, Radio Intelligence Division, where he received honorable discharges. He was a graduate of the Quarter Master and Signal School, and was stationed at the New London Submarine Base. He attended New Castle High School, Purdue University and Indiana University and had completed UAW-CIO Leadership Training. He had also completed courses in Police Training and was at one time the only qualified Police Firearms Instructor in Henry County.

He was President of the Fraternal Order of Police from 1969 to 1974, President of the Police Congress Club, and President of Meadow Gold Union. He was the Steward and Committeeman of Perfect Circle. He was also a member of the V.F.W., AMVETS, and of the Underwater Society of America. He served 40 years as a Range Officer for the Police Pistol Training Program, and 10 years on the New Castle Police Pistol Team. He was a member of the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in New Castle. He was rewarded the Revolver Expert in shooting the PPC Course. Also, he taught classes in Basic Police Training and Fingerprinting to New Castle police officers. He served 6 years on the New Castle First Aid Department and worked from 1953-1977 where retired as a New Castle police officer. He was also employed by the New Castle Street Department. He was the Commissioner at one time. He also worked as a security guard for Hook’s Drugs in Indianapolis.

Archie is survived by his children: Linda (husband: Rodger) Raines of New Castle, Larry (wife: Diann) Slettvet of Florida, Lana Gooding of New Castle, Laura (husband: Clifford) Moore of Texas, Sharon Thompson of New Castle, Terry (wife: Cheryl) Slettvet, and Tara (husband: Delmer) Duvall both of New Castle; fourteen grandchildren: Brad (Scarlett) Raines, Brian (Karen) Raines, Tracey Slettvet, Angela Slettvet, Misty Shore-Slettvet, Wade Slettvet, Sandra Slettvet, Joseph Slettvet, Scott (Anita) McFalls, Brandy Gilmore, Heather Butler, Ryan Thompson, Ronnie Whitehead, and Zack Slettvet; and twenty one great-grandchildren. Also surviving Archie are his siblings: Gladys Frankenberg, Elizabeth Naja, Erma Long, Beverly Leisure, Dallas and Donald Slettvet.

He is preceded in death by his first wife: Thelma Irene Smith Slettvet; second wife: Sandra Prince Slettvet; grandson: Michael Hubert Slettvet; sisters: Pearl V. Slettvet, Myrtle Worley, Louis Ann Fossett, Juanita Bell, and Dorothy Wendryhoski; brothers: Herbert and Floyd Slettvet.

Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday, February 26, 2010 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle. Burial will follow in South Mound Cemetery West Lawn Addition. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Thursday, February 25, 2010 at the funeral home.Memorial contributions may be given to the Disabled American Veterans or the American Cancer Society with envelopes available at the funeral home.
