Arlin “Steve” G. Meikamp, 89, of Kennard, passed away Thursday, September 3, 2015 at IU Health Ball Hospital in Muncie. He was born July 8, 1926 in Edwardsville, IL a son of the late Albert and Minnie (Rembke) Meikamp.
Steve was a 1949 graduate of Edwardsville High School. He enjoyed life and was devoted to his country. Steve was a Seaman 1st Class in the U.S. Navy during WWII and was a “Plank Member” on the U.S.S. Manderson Victory, stationed in the South Pacific. First and foremost he was devoted to his wife, children, grandchild and great grandchildren. He was a past Master of the Shirley Masonic Lodge #531 and was a 51 year member. He was also a 50 year member of the New Castle Order of the Eastern Star #116. Steve retired from Ford Motor Corporation following 30 years of service. He enjoyed growing flowers, feeding birds, and being an arborist, planting trees.
He is survived by his daughter, Joyce Meikamp of South Charleston, WV; son, Thomas A. Meikamp of Kennard; granddaughter, Michelle (Ben) Walters of New Castle; great grandchildren, Blake and Callie Walters of New Castle; a brother, Alvin (Jo) Meikamp of Edwardsville, IL; several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Wilma Meikamp in 2013; a brother, Albert Meikamp; and a sister, DeVera Gebhart.
Services will be at 11:00 AM Wednesday, September 9, 2015 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle with Pastor Paul Davis officiating. Military rites will be conducted by the New Castle American Legion and an active duty contingent of the U.S. Navy. Burial will follow in South Mound Cemetery, West Lawn Addition.
