Audrey Lee "Podge" Upchurch

Audrey Lee “Podge” Upchurch, age 90, of New Castle passed away on Friday, March 3, 2023 at The Waters of New Castle. She was born on July 25, 1932 in Henry County to the late Alonzo and Elizabeth (Davis) Lowe.

Audrey was a lifelong resident of New Castle and retired from the New Castle State Hospital. She had to quit school in the seventh grade to take care of her younger siblings, but went back in 1997, at the age of 65, and got her GED. Audrey loved spending time with her family and was the hub of all holidays and matriarch of the family celebrations. She loved to travel and would travel as often as she could. She loved playing piano, crocheting, board and card games and singing on stage with her brothers. She was the one that her family went to when they needed a cake. She made many different kinds of cakes and decorated them for whatever the occasion was. Audrey married Gleason Upchurch on June 21, 1949 and he passed away on July 14, 1967 in a traffic accident

Survivors include a daughter, Debi Cole of New Castle; sons, Michael Upchurch of Shirley and Dennis Upchurch of Lafayette; brother, Dan (Lilly) Lowe; sister, Barbara Sue Johnson; 8 grandchildren, Cindy White, Eric Barnes, Shane Cole, Josh Barnes, John Upchurch, Sonnie Pierce, Kelli Cole and Sara Upchurch and 15 great grandchildren along with numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, Audrey was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda (Stanley) Barnes on May 14, 2021; daughter-in-law, Debra Jo Upchurch on August 20, 2021; brothers, Jackie Boy, Jerry Lowe, Raymond Lowe, Jim Lowe, Stanley Lowe; sisters, Jeanette Lowe, Sharon Brewer, Mildred Wolf and Sara Belle Thompson; twin grandsons Dustin Cole and Randy Cole.

Services will be at 1 pm on Tuesday, March 7, 2023 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle with Pastor Donald Silvers officiating. Burial will follow at South Mound Cemetery West Lawn Addition.
