Bernice Bivens, 86, of New Castle, passed away Wednesday, July 9, 2014 at IU Health Ball Hospital in Muncie. She was born August 20, 1927 in Ashland, KY a daughter of William Monroe and Susann (Napier) Maynard.
Bernice retired from New Castle Continuing Education and had previously been employed at Modernfold Corporation in New Castle. She was a member of the New Castle Art Guild. She loved the outdoors and enjoyed painting, birdwatching, sewing, boating, camping and swimming.
She is survived by four children: Laura (Kenneth) Wenger of Muncie, Robert (Stacy) Bivens, Jr. of Connersville, Kenneth D. Bivens of Connersville, Ronald J. Bivens (Barry Guffey) of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; grandchildren: Jennifer Smalley (fiancé: Milan Setka) of Dandridge, TN, Cheryl Landis of Ingalls, Raymond Kerry Bivens, Joseph Casey Bivens of New Castle, Ashley (Dave) Horvak of Lexington, KY, Vincent Riley of Centerville, Ryan Newtz of Lexington, KY, Morgan Middleton of Connersville, Sabrina Dione (Troy) Gill of Connersville, Krystal Lynn Bivens (Keith Shaw) of New Castle, Sharon (Joe) Bergen of New Castle; 12 great grandchildren: Allison Smalley, Charles Michael Landis III, Bryce Kenneth Landis, Peyton Trent Preston, Kylie Dannielle Walker, Adam Michael Bivens, Kiara Faith Swain, Gracelynn Hope Shaw, Emma Love Shaw, Daniel & Elizabeth Shaw, Vance Tyler Bergen and Luke Avery Bergen; three sisters: Bercie Jacobs of Greenfield, Nila (Elliott) Perry of Bedford and Yvonne (Wilburn) Owens of Monticello, KY; several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband: Robert R. Bivens, Sr. in 2009; a grandson: Robert Kelly Bivens; sisters: Ocie McKee, Luzetta Vestal Allison, Opal Maynard; 2 brothers: Erval Maynard and Scottie Maynard.
Services will be at 2:30 PM Sunday, July 13, 2014 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle with Reverend Elliott Perry officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hills Memory Gardens.
