Betty J. Cross, 86, of Mooreland, passed away Sunday, May 29, 2011 at A Place Called Home in Mooreland following an extended illness. She was born December 7, 1924 in Terre Haute, a daughter of the late Ray and Narca (Ervin) Searcy.

Betty attended New Castle Schools and worked in the food service department at Blue River Elementary School for many years. She had also been a motor route carrier for The Courier-Times for several years. She had attended the Messick Church of the Brethren and more recently the Memorial Baptist Church in New Castle.

She is survived by her daughter: Jeanne Duncan of New Castle; grandchildren: Justin Duncan of Mooreland and Chelsi Hiner of New Castle; a brother, Dan (wife, Debbie) Searcy of Centerville and two sisters, Karla (husband, David) McGaughey of Losantville and Wanda (husband, Mike) Hornstein of Kokomo; four sisters-in-law: Ruth Searcy of New Lisbon, Leithel Jester of Muncie, Jean Searcy, Barbara Searcy; and several nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 70 years, Merle, who passed away May 16, 2011; four brothers, Bob, Jim, Don, and Jack Searcy; and a sister, Bonnie.

Services will be at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, June 2, 2011 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle with Reverend Thomas H. Current officiating. Burial will follow in Mooreland Cemetery. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, June 1, 2011 at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Research Association with envelopes available at the funeral home.
