Bill Groce, 73, a lifelong resident of New Castle passed away December 31, 2015 at his home following a brief illness. He was born May 7, 1942 in New Castle, a son of the late Willie Robert and Anna (Hammond) Groce.
Bill loved to build, building everything, from small items like a hope chest to large structures such as homes, barns, and businesses. He was owner of Bill Groce Construction until 1979. Bill was then employed by Newcomer Lumber in Greenfield as sales manager before retiring in 2007. He was a proud veteran of the US Army. On May 17, 1960, Bill married the love of his life, Charlotte. Bill loved his wife, children, and grandchildren with his whole heart, always placing the needs of his family before his. He was the “Rock” for his entire family. Bill enjoyed hunting and fishing with friends and it seemed he would know somebody everywhere he went. Bill was a member of the New Castle Masonic Lodge #91, New Castle American Legion Post #137, and enjoyed gardening. Bill’s family would like to extend a special heartfelt thank you to, Jason Hamby from the Henry County Hospice for all of the special care given to Bill and his family during his illness.
In addition to his wife of 55 years, Charlotte (Williams) Groce of New Castle, Bill is survived by his son, Bill (Peggy) Groce Jr. of Losantville; daughter, June (Jim) Marshall of Hagerstown; grandchildren, Brandon (Patricia) Groce of Hagerstown, Brittany Groce of Losantville, Jimmy and Jarred Marshall both of Hagerstown; siblings, Herman Groce of New Castle, Kenneth Groce of New Castle, Geneva Lowe of New Castle, Imogene Wooten of Noblesville, James Brown of Indianapolis, Linda (Charles) McDaniels of Indianapolis, Louise (Donald) Glover of Louisiana, Karen (Charlie) Brann of Alexandria, VA, Sharon (Larry)McFarland of Columbus, Phillip (Barbara)Groce of New Castle, and Jack (Cece) Groce of Kennard; several nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by a son, Frankie Dean Groce; siblings, Elwood Groce, Clifton Groce, Alva Groce, Nellie Hammond, Leona Mae Groce and Jeanette Kelly.
Services will be 11AM Monday, January 4, 2016 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle with Pastor Paul Gearhardt officiating. Burial will follow in South Mound Cemetery West Lawn Addition with military honors conducted by the American Legion, VFW, and the US Army. Friends may call from 2-6PM Sunday at the funeral home with Masonic Rites beginning at 5:30PM conducted by the New Castle Masonic Lodge # 91. Condolences and memories of Bill may be shared at
