Bobby Joe Cater, 89, of Knoxville, TN and formerly of New Castle, IN passed away September 8, 2022 following a brief illness. He was born on October 31, 1932 in Manila AK, a son of the late, Earl E. and Necie (Crews) Cater.
Bobby was a graduate of New Castle Chrysler High School. He served his country in the US Army as a Corporal during the Korean Conflict in 1953 and 1954 and from 1954 thru 1961 at Fort Benjamin Harrison in the Army Reserves.
In 1956, Bobby married his wife of 43 years, Carolyn “Sue” Harris, in June 1956. Carolyn passed away in August of 1999.
Bobby was employed by Modernfold Industries and retired from Chrysler Corporation in September of 1992, after 30 years of service. He was a member and past officer of the New Castle Moose Lodge and New Castle VFW. Bobby volunteered for several years in the group, Grand Old Uproars, where he performed as Elvis. The group would do shows for nursing homes and for fund raising events.
Bobby was an avid racing fan, especially NASCAR and short track racing. He owned cars in the ASA Racing League and raced at tracks such as Mount Lawn Speedway, Anderson Speedway, Winchester Speedway, Eldora Speedway and raceway Park and many other tracks all over the Midwest.
Bobby also enjoyed fishing, boating, camping, playing golf, woodworking, watching college and NFL football and college fast pitch softball. After retirement, Bobby lived in Mount Dora, FL until moving to Seymour, TN, where he enjoyed spending time in the Smoky Mountains.
Bobby is survived by his children, Terry Cater (Lisa Lovell) of New Castle, Pam Thompson (Barry) of Seymour, TN, Cindy Smith (Allen) of Mays, IN; nine grandchildren, Shaun Cater (Cynthia), Chris Cater (Aleshia), Karri Champion (Jeremiah), Brittney Frazier (Shawn), Heather Sentell (Cale), Kristin Baragwanath (Matt), Dustin Chesher (Mikala), Shelby (Seth) Newhouse and Summer Smith; seventeen great grandchildren; Zachary Rodgers, Chase, Zoe, and Chelsea Cater, Emily Worthen, Camden, Conner and Carlee Frazier, Tysin and Daxtin Chesher, Caleb and EllaGrace Sentell, Jacob and Matthew Champion, Lincoln Newhouse, Riley and Liv Baragwanath; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to his parents and wife, Bobby was preceded in death by his sisters, Earlene Grass and Louise Cater; niece, Amy McKown; best friend and brother-in-law, Dale Grass and several other aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at 1:00pm Monday, September 12, 2022 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle. Burial will follow in South Mound Cemetery with military honors provided by the New Castle American Legion/VFW and the US Army. Visitation will be from 11:00am until the time of service on Monday.
