Brenda S. Barnes, 61, of Shirley passed away Sunday, April 21, 2013 at Hancock Regional Hospital following a brief illness. She was born June 5, 1951 in New Castle the daughter of the late Thomas Cadwallader and Evelyn (Pryor) Tappley.

Brenda was a 1969 graduate of Frankton High School and served in the U.S. Army. She was a house parent at the Bennett House in New Castle, Marion County Children’s Home in Indianapolis and the Indiana Soldiers and Sailors Children’s Home where she was known as “Miss B.”

She is survived by her husband of 37 years: Ewell K. “Barney” Barnes of Shirley; two sons, Gregg (Carrie Thayer) Barnes of Shelbyville, Luke (Mel) Barnes of Ft. Benning, GA; three grandchildren: Shane, Katelyn and Emily Barnes; siblings: Harry Cadwallader of Wannamaker, Sylvia Johnson of Brown County, Gary (Wanda) Burton of WA, Linda (Terry) Moore of New Castle, Bill (Jerri) Cadwallader of Manilla, Elizabeth Pinon of New Castle, Jackie (Dan) Schnautz of Rushville, Teresa (John) Davis of Richmond, and Laura Swejkar of Manilla; several nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews, and her beloved dog, Tabitha.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by an infant grandson: Timmy Barnes; and a brother: Thomas Cadwallader.

Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. Arrangements have been entrusted to Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service Knightstown Chapel.
