Burma Ellen Storie Amonett Thornell was born March 27, 1942 to Clayton Winton Storie and Rema Gordon Crouch Storie in Moodyville in Pickett County, TN. She graduated from Pickett County High School in 1960. On January 31, 1960, she married Philip Harold Amonett and moved to Muncie, Indiana where they lived for several years. They had two children, Teresa Amonett and Philip Gregory Amonett. They spent their adult life together living years in both Muncie, IN and Byrdstown, TN. Burma worked as a bank teller for 3 ½ years, did bookkeeping for a publishing company for 7 years, and later as a realtor for Better Homes and Gardens in Muncie. She was an active participant in every church in which she was a member. Her involvement with her church was always a very important part of her life. Her hobbies and interests included flower arranging, reading, gardening, studying the Bible, and ballroom dancing. She and Philip were married for 30 years, and she lost him suddenly in 1990. In 1992, she married Richard Thornell and they moved to Sulphur Springs, IN. In 1993, they began attending Sulphur Springs Christian Church. She cherished her time spent with her friends of her church, her Bible studies, and the pastors there.
She leaves to cherish her memory, her husband of 24 years, Richard Thornell of Sulphur Springs; her children, Teresa Ellen Amonett of Madison, WI; and Philip Gregory (Kelly Hoepner) Amonett of Livingston, TN; stepdaughters, Mona (Tim) Miller of Ossian, IN; and Robin (Jerry) Trivette of Delphos, OH; 7 grandchildren, Amanda (Joey) Yother, Emily Amonett, and Landon Amonett; Lindsay (David) Williamson, and Grant Brooks; and step-grandchildren, Brianna (Jeremy) Hamilton and Elaine Lock; and one great grandchild, Valerie; 2 sisters, Kathy (Paul) Parris of Kingsport, TN and Brenda (Delbert) Johnson of Wilmington, NC; several nieces and nephews, and a host of friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Clayton and Rema; 2 brothers, Joe Storie and Jack Store; a sister and brother-in-law, Joy and Jim Parris; and her first husband, Philip.
A service to celebrate Burma’s life will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, February 18, 2017 at Sulphur Springs Christian Church. Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. Friday, February 17 at the church. Burial will be at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, February 19 at Amonett Cemetery in Byrdstown, Tennessee. Memorial contributions may be made to Sulphur Springs Christian Church, 3368 US-36, Middletown, IN 47356.
