Carl Haggard

Carl Haggard, 76, of New Castle, passed away Tuesday, February 24, 2009 at his residence after a battle with cancer. He was born May 13, 1932 in Mintonville, KY the son of Joe Mitchell and Lou Vada (Moore) Haggard.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War from 1951 to 1954 and was retired from Smurfit-Stone Container Corporation. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in New Castle and the United Paperworkers of America. He was a Boy Scout leader, enjoyed coon hunting, woodworking and gardening. He also loved gospel music. Carl was very active in the lives of his children and grandchildren.

He is survived by four children: Gary Lee Haggard; Deborah Lynn (husband: Barry) Thurman; Gregory Reece (wife: Gail) Haggard; and Marcus Dewayne (wife: Michelle) Haggard all of New Castle; grandchildren: Bobby (fiance: Marti McDaniel) Haggard; Hope (husband: Derek) Winship; Jeremy Ward; Brittany (husband: Brock) Davis; Stephen Thurman; Ashley Thurman all of New Castle; Micah (husband: Frank) Aguilar of Valrico, Fl; Trisha (husband: Mike) Millard of Peoria, IL; Chris (wife: Brooke) Haggard; Jaime (husband: Eric) Moffitt; Rachel Haggard (companion: Adam Dawson); Shelby Haggard; Samantha Haggard all of New Castle; Kiley (husband: Brett) Bloom of Laveen, AZ; great grandchildren: Kyrah Haggard; Sydnee Haggard; Paige Norris; Dustin McDaniel; Ethan Winship; Carmen Davis; Katelynn Haggard; Jacob Aguilar; Thomas Millard; Riley Millard; Lacy Haggard; Macy Haggard; Kailee Haggard; Kain Massengale; Madilyn Moffitt; Alainey Moffitt; Megan McCarty; Andrea McCarty; Shania McCarty; three sisters: Geneva (husband: Lloyd) Eastham of Somerset, KY; Joyce (husband: Ron) Neikirk of Somerset, KY; Hester (husband: Estel) Gover of Aurora, IN; several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife: Shelvia Jean Haggard; a son: Donnie Ray Haggard; daughter-in-law: Kathy Haggard; brothers: Roy and Oliver Haggard; sisters: Beulah Hall, Illa Wesley; Imogene Roberts; Beatrice Stringer; Zelma Haggard; Marie Haggard.

Services will be at 1:00 PM Friday, February 27 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle with Brother Bobby Slagle and Reverend Brock Davis officiating. Burial will follow in South Mound Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by the American Legion and the VFW. Friends may call from 4-8 PM Thursday, February 26.
