Catherine Mahin, 84, of New Castle, formerly of Orlando, FL, died at Henry County Hospital on Monday, January 18, 2010 after a short illness. Catherine was the wife of the late Howard (Lefty) Mahin and the first daughter of the late Sam and Sevasti Tambucos. Born July 6, 1925, Catherine attended New Castle schools with the class of 1942 and was retired from Bell Telephone after a 39 year career. She was also a lifetime member of the Bell Telephone Pioneers and the Communications Workers of America.
An avid bowler and gardener, Catherine loved animals and raised several English Bull Dogs over the years. After having moved to Orlando in 1970, Catherine returned to New Castle in 2001 to be near her sister, Bess. For the last year, Catherine was a resident of Glen Oaks Health Campus.
Survivors include her three children: Sandra (husband: Michael) Sweigart of New Castle, Kris (wife: Karen) Mahin of New Castle and Fort Meyers Beach, FL; Sam Mahin (companion: Guy Kollat) of Orlando, FL; three grandchildren: Stacey (husband: Jeff) Wright of Lawrenceburg, KY; Amanda (husband: Roland) Dube of Richmond, KY; Erin Brooke Mahin (companion: Scott Wise) of New Castle. She also had six great grandchildren: Jacob, Cody and Alyssa Wright; Michael and Caroline Dube, and Lillian Sage Guffey. She is also survived by her sister: Bess Swindell; two nieces: Katie Swindell of New Castle and Jennie (husband: Carlos) Campbell of New Palestine; a great niece: Aubrey Campbell and two great nephews: Riley and Toby Campbell.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Howard (Lefty) Mahin; a beloved sister: Mary Tambucos Chenoweth.
Services will be at 12:00 noon on Friday, January 22, 2010 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle with Pastor Randy Shinolt officiating. Burial will follow in South Mound Cemetery. Friends may call from 10 AM to noon prior to the service. Memorial contributions may be made to the New Castle Humane Society with envelopes available at the funeral home.
