Cecil W. Hammond, age 86, of Spiceland, passed away Monday, May 11, 2009 at Henry County Hospital. He was born January 20, 1923 in Delta, Kentucky to the late Corbin and Vada (Branscum) Hammond.
He retired from the United States Army and Navy on September 30, 1965. He fought in 3 battles and holds 3 battle stars (Iwo Jima, Okinawa and Phillipines). He worked at Delco Remy in Anderson for 16 years and retired in 1983. He was a member of Cedar Hills Baptist Church in Delta, Kentucky and attended the United Methodist Church in Spiceland. He was a life-time member of the American Legion # 137, Veterans of Foreign Wars #1282, Disabled American Veterans, Destroyers Escort Sailors Association, and Spiceland Lions Club.
Survivors include his wife: Josephine (Nicholas) Hammond whom he married September 2, 1943; one son: Jack (wife: Peggy) Hammond of Indianapolis; daughter-in-law: Lynnette Hammond of Kokomo; two grandsons: John C. Hammond and James C. Hammond; two great granddaughters: Kaylyn and Emma Hammond; brothers: Reverend Jessie (wife: Artie) Hammond of Monticello, KY, Paul (wife: Ann) Hammond of Hagerstown, MD and Corbin (wife: Sue) Hammond of Monticello, KY; several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son: Steve Hammond; two brothers: Warren and David Hammond; two sisters: Helen and Lucy New.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 14, 2009 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle.Military rites will be conducted by the American Legion Post 152.
