Claudine Whalen

Claudine Whalen, 80, of New Castle, passed away Thursday, December 11, 2008 at her residence after an extended illness. During her illness she was cared for by her guardian angels, son Mark and niece, Debbie. She was born July 2, 1928, in Wythe County, VA the daughter of Arther and Virginia Jane (Wampler) Crouse.

She graduated from Rural Retreat High School in Rural Retreat, VA and attended nursing school in Chicago. She retired from New Castle State Developmental Center after 23 years as a Developmental Skills Technician. She loved to fish, was an avid Bingo player and was a member of the Eagles Lodge.

Claudine is survived by a son: Mark Whalen of New Castle; a very special great granddaughter: Taylor Whalen of New Castle.; one grandson, Jeremy of New Castle; three granddaughters: Melissa and Kylie of New Castle and Angel; eight great grandchildren; a nephew: Tony (wife: Debbie) Lough of Mooreland; nieces: Suzi (husband: Rick) Pope of Mooreland; Teresa (husband: Tedd) Orcutt of OH; two sisters: Josephine Bearman of FL and Anna Mae Joines of NC; one brother: Junior of NC; sisters-in-law: Mary Lee Shrader of VA; Jean Whalen of VA; Eulah (husband: James) Fielder of VA; Kathleen Walters of VA; Gladys Page of MD; brothers-in-law: Robert Whalen of MD; John (wife: Joann) Whalen of VA and J.R. Whalen of VA; several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years: Andrew Whalen; a son:Dallas Whalen; a granddaughter: Daleen Downs; a brother: Elmer Crouse.

Services will be at 3:00 PM Sunday, December 14, 2008 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle with Rev. Thomas Current officiating. Friends may call from 12:00 – 3:00 PM prior to the service.
