Daniel P. "Danny" Smekens

Daniel P. “Danny” Smekens, 38, of New Castle, passed away Sunday in his home following a courageous six-year battle with cancer. He was born March 21, 1972 in Muncie, a son of James and Charlotte (Simmons) Smekens.
A 1990 graduate of New Castle Chrysler High School, he also attended Ball State University. He was employed for several years at Martin Tire in New Castle, attaining the position of Service Manager until its closing. He also had worked for Chad Critser previous to his diagnosis.
Danny was very involved in Little League baseball. He was presently the Vice President of Little League in New Castle and had coached the Reds for the past 6 years. He helped coach the 9/10 year old 2009 State Championship team and was head coach of the 9/10 year old 2010 State Championship team. Danny was the only coach in New Castle Little League to coach in three State finals and one of only two coaches, along with his best friend, Bret Mann, to have won two State Championships. He enjoyed playing golf, reading mysteries and watching westerns. Danny was named Hometown Hero in December 2010.
He leaves to cherish his memory; son, Nicholas Smekens, and his mother, Misty of New Castle; a daughter and son, Chandra Smekens and Cayden Smekens, and their mother and Danny’s former wife, Paige Smekens, all of New Castle; Danny’s twin brother, Kevin Smekens, sister, Sally Smekens (companion, Todd), and brother Andy Smekens (who was Danny’s caregiver for the past month) and his companion, Paula; his father, Jim Smekens, maternal grandmother, Mae (Simmons) Mercer and her husband, Jim; several aunts, uncles, cousins, and a host of friends.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Charlotte (Simmons) Smekens, maternal grandfather, Harry Simmons, paternal grandmother, Helen Smekens, uncle, Dick Smekens and cousins, Gary Smekens, and Heather Simmons.
Services will be at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, March 19, 2011 at the First Baptist Church in New Castle with Pastors Eric Haler and Jerry Ingalls officiating. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Friday, March 18, 2011 at the First Baptist Church and one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the Danny Smekens Memorial Fund, c/o Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service, 3406 S. Memorial Drive, New Castle, IN 47362. Envelopes will be available at the church. Arrangements have been entrusted to Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle. Online condolences may be expressed at www.hinsey-brown.com .
