Dick Shafer

Dick L. Shafer, age 73, of New Castle, died unexpectedly in his home on Saturday, September 5, 2009. He was born March 14, 1936 in New Castle, a son of the late Howard J. and Hilda I. (Utt) Shafer.

Dick was employed by First National Bank and Commonwealth Loan Company before retiring from Citizen’s State Bank in New Castle in 1997 as Senior Vice President. An avid golfer and race fan, he enjoyed watching his grandchildren at their various sporting activities. Dick was a member and past Treasurer of the Breakfast Optimist Club and was Optimist of the Year in 1975. He was also a member of the Lewisville Lions Club.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years: Shirley Shafer of New Castle; children, Debbie (husband, John) Trent, Jeff (wife, Cathy) Shafer, both of New Castle, Todd (wife, Stacy) Shafer of Kokomo, Lori (husband, James) Thompson, Hank (wife, Robin) Shafer, and Joy (husband, Steve) Miller, all of New Castle; grandchildren; Jason (wife, Wendy) Atkinson, Danielle Trent, all of New Castle, Halen and Shaylee Shafer of Kokomo, Joshua Batt, Jesse Thompson, Travis Thompson, Karlee Shafer, Kirstyn Shafer and Daniel Miller, all of New Castle; a great granddaughter, Kaylee Atkinson of New Castle; step grandchildren, Michelle Pierson of Kokomo, Brandon Smith of New Castle, Kim Sparks of Fishers and Brandon Craig of New Castle; great-step grandchildren: Emerald and Emily Gundy, Max Pierson, Kassen Smith, and Justice Tuttle all of New Castle and Olivia Collins of Kokomo and Taylor Sparks of Fishers; a sister, Sue (husband, Harlin) Dalton of New Castle; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Betty Ezell, a brother in law, Bill Ezell; close friends Manser and Mary Starr.

Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 9, 2009 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service with the Reverend Dennis Hilton officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hills Memory Gardens. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday, September 8, 2009 at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be given to the Henry County Heart Association with envelopes available at the funeral home.
