Donn E. Foulke, age 94, of Hagerstown, passed away Monday, July 6, 2015 at Hancock Regional Hospital. He was born February 3, 1921 in New Castle to the late Russell and Mary Fern (Wisehart) Foulke.
He was a graduate of Hagerstown High School and AH Purdue University. Donn was a lifelong farmer in the Millville area, he had formerly been employed at Perfect Circle in Hagerstown. He was a veteran of the United States Army in WWII at the Battle of the Bulge. He also served in Austria, England, Northern Ireland, Germany and France. He was a recipient of 4 bronze stars and WWII Victory Medal. Donn was past president of the Hagerstown School Board from 1977-1980. He also served on the Boards of Brick Church Cemetery and Chicago Corner Christian Church where he also served as an elder. He served on the High School Vocational board for four years. Donn was past commander and physical officer of the American Legion Post 333 in Hagerstown, where he had been a member for over 60 years. He received the Good Neighbor Award and American Legion 50 plus year award. For the past 17 years, he enjoyed spending 6 months in Florida.
Survivors include his wife of 33 years, Marcia (Elwood) Foulke; daughter, Donnae (Jim) Strother of Millville; son, James Foulke of Hagerstown; daughter, Jennifer Shafer of Indianapolis; son, Mark (April) Shafer of Hagerstown and son, Robert (Kim) Solomon of Connersville; grandchildren, Cole Solomon of Connersville, Shelly and Anna Shafer of Hagerstown, Nickie (Nate) Walker of New Castle; three great grandchildren; two sisters, Marty Brown of Hagerstown and Betty Fox of Ft. Worth, TX; several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Cheryl Solomon; brother, James Foulke; mother-in-law, Olive Elwood.
Services will be at 3:00 p.m. Thursday, July 9, 2015 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle with Reverend Rodney Frieden officiating. Burial will follow in Brick Cemetery with military rites conducted by the Hagerstown American Legion and an active duty contingent from the U.S. Army.
