Doris Pfenninger Tipton, 89, loving grandmother, mother, sister, and aunt, passed away September 30, 2011 while living at Glen Oaks Health Campus. She was born October 1, 1921 in New Castle a daughter of Alfred and Hassel (Wilkinson) Pfenninger. She graduated from New Castle High School, New Castle, IN in 1939. She graduated from Amber Beauty College in Muncie, IN and became the Founder/Owner of Curlette Beauty Shop on 18th Street in New Castle for several years and was an active member of Pythian Sisters in New Castle. She married Dan B. Tipton in 1947 and they later moved to Indianapolis where they owned Custom Gage and Tool Company. She moved back to New Castle in 1992 and was an active member of First United Methodist Church and PEO Chapter ‘CG’. An avid quilter, she belonged to the Homemaker’s Club and was awarded for her quilt making through her involvement with the Henry County Quilt Guild. She loved home made items and was an excellent knitter and seamstress. She was active in the Eastern Star and Daughters of the Nile while in Indianapolis. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1977, her parents, four brothers: Elmer, Walter, Alvis, and Byron Pfenninger and two sisters: Lena Simmons DeWitt and Leona Lines Wisecup. Survivors include her loving daughters JoAnn Tipton of Westfield, Barbara Keyes of Westfield, and Judith Walz (husband, Michael) of St. Johns, Florida; and two loving grandsons Joseph Keyes of Indianapolis, and Samuel Keyes of Indianapolis; her brother Frank Pfenninger and sister Ada Marcum both of New Castle.
Services will be at 1:00 PM Monday, October 3, 2011 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service with the Reverends Verne Sindlinger and Tom McGilliard officiating. Burial will follow in South Mound Cemetery. Friends may call from 4-7 PM Sunday, October 2 at the funeral home.
