Dorothy Pauline Barkdull, age 95, of New Castle, passed away Monday, February 3, 2014 at St. Vincent Hospital. She was born October 29, 1918 in New Castle to the late Jess and Rozoltha (Hayden) Jackson.
She retired from Guide Lamp in Anderson in 1982 following 30 years of service. She was a member of Eagles where she was a Golden Eagle, and was the oldest living member. She was also a member of the Ruth Circle of First United Methodist Church. Dorothy bowled on a league and volunteered at Henry County Hospital. She loved bowling, cooking, playing Euchre at the Senior Center, traveling, crocheting and needle point. An accomplished seamstress, she had made her daughters clothing in earlier years.
Survivors include three daughters, Judith A. (Thomas) Hedrick of Oxford, IN, Nancy J. (Steve) Hernly of New Castle and Martha J. (Walter) Stoots of New Castle; grandchildren, Leann (Steve) Brace of Hazel Green, AL, Michael (Emma) Hedrick of Martinsville, Susan Wallen of New Castle, Chris Hernly, of New Castle, Michele Stoots (deceased) Jeffrey (Laura) Stoots of Columbus, OH, Julia (John) Anderson of New Castle; fifteen great grandchildren; one great-great grandson; brother-in-law, Joseph Calabra of Hobe Sound, FL; several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph A. Barkdull in 1972; four siblings, Frank, Floyd and Jesse Jackson and Rosemary Calabra.
Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday, February 7, 2014 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle with Reverend Tom McGilliard officiating. Burial will follow in South Mound Cemetery.
