Ellis A Atkinson

September 6, 1935 — November 16, 2011

Ellis A. Atkinson, age 76, of New Castle, went to be with the Lord Wednesday, November 16, 2011 at his residence. He was born September 6, 1935 in Wayne County, Kentucky to the late William and Elsie (Bell) Atkinson.

He grew up in the community of Slate, Kentucky and moved to New Castle at the age of 16 where he married Joyce Surber, August 3, 1956. He retired from Ingersol Steel after 30 years of service. He was a member of UAW Local 729, a member of New Charity Baptist Church in Monticello, Kentucky and attended First Baptist Church in New Castle. He loved his family and liked to watch his grandchildren play sports. He also enjoyed fishing, going to flea markets and gun shows.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Joyce (Surber) Atkinson; they were blessed with three sons, Jerry Ellis (friend, Joanne) Atkinson of Richmond, Larry Ray (wife, Greta) Atkinson of Greensburg and Gary Alan (wife, Michelle) Atkinson of Wabash; six grandchildren, Jason Lee (wife, Wendy) Atkinson of New Castle, Michelle Lynn Atkinson of New Castle, Kiel Shawn (wife, Stephanie) Atkinson of Noblesville, Keith Alan (wife, Stacy) Atkinson of Beaufort, SC, Matthew Duane (wife, Tracy) Atkinson of St. Mary’s, GA and Austin Ray Atkinson of Greensburg; six great grandchildren, Kaylee Atkinson, Emerald and Emily Grundy, Elijah and Kyrie Jade Atkinson and Kelsey Atkinson; sister, Neta Fay (husband, Sam) Cummings, Sr. of Monticello, KY; special friends, Fred and Phyllis Aquilar of Denver, CO.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sisters, Reba Stockton and Margie Porter; three brothers, Glen, Gene, and Kay.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, November 19, 2011 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle with Reverends Jerry Ingalls and Jack Hannum officiating. Burial will follow in South Mound Cemetery-West Lawn Addition. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Friday, November 18, 2011 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the Henry County Hospice, 798 N. 16th Street, New Castle, IN 47362 or Henry County Heart Association, 1000 N. 16th Street, New Castle, IN 47362 with envelopes available at the funeral home.
