Erma "Eileen" Newcomb

November 4, 1924 — March 7, 2025

Wilkinson

Erma Eileen Newcomb, 100, formerly of Wilkinson, passed away on Friday, March 7, 2025, at Springhurst Health Campus. Born on November 4, 1924, in Springfield, Illinois, she was the daughter of the late Jesse and Minnie (Kinnaman) Harty.

Eileen moved to Knightstown, Indiana from Puxico, Missouri in 1936, and graduated from Knightstown High School in 1943. That same year, on April 16, she married the love of her life, Emmett William Newcomb, and became a proud WWII bride. They shared over 73 wonderful years together until his passing in 2016.

Eileen was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She and Emmett raised their five children on a small farm in Wilkinson, Indiana, where she instilled in them the values of hard work, kindness, and the importance of family. She worked in a school cafeteria for nine years.

Eileen was a longtime member of Wilkinson United Methodist Church. She had a passion for gardening, both flowers and vegetables, and took pride in preserving the fruits of her labor through canning and freezing. She also enjoyed working with ceramics, playing dominos, and later in life, assembling puzzles. She adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, cherishing every moment she spent caring for them. She was the glue, a peacekeeper, that held her family together.

Eileen was survived by her loving children, Virginia Eileen (Ron) Zapf, Barbara Ann (Jay) Williams, Robert Emmett (Vera Jean) Newcomb, James William (Shelley) Newcomb, and Paul David (Kalynne) Newcomb; 11 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; her sister, Vivian Britton; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Emmett William Newcomb; two grandsons, Brian Zapf and Randy Newcomb; her sister, Donnie Jean Winkler; and her daughter-in-law, Linda Newcomb.

Eileen will be remembered as a kind, hardworking woman who dedicated her life to her family and friends, welcoming all with open arms and a warm meal.
