Esther Elizabeth Jacobs, 95, a former New Castle resident, died Saturday, November 9, 2013 at Forum at The Crossing in Indianapolis. She was born August 8, 1918 in Winslow, Indiana to the late Luther and Ethel Hale of Winslow, Indiana.
A 1935 graduate of Winslow High School and Secretary of her class, she received her B.S. degree from Indiana University in 1939 where she lettered on the I.U. girls rifle team and was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority. After her marriage to Leque Jacobs in 1940, she moved to New Castle and became an active member of the First Presbyterian Church. She participated in Circle, was deacon and supported fund raisers for the church which included collecting and delivering Christmas gifts and food to the New Castle State Hospital and less fortunate families. Esther was a member of PEO, Tri Kappa, Eastern Star and was Secretary of the New Castle Girl Scout Council and a supporter of various charities and foundations in New Castle.
After receiving her Masters of Art degree from Ball State University in 1972 she was Supervisor of Elementary Library Services until her retirement in 1984. Esther loved to read and play bridge. Her love of reading was passed on to her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren as well as students she worked with in the elementary schools. She was a talented artist and loved crafts. Her home at Christmas was always decorated with her craft projects which she loved doing.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Leque G. Jacobs; her parents, Luther and Ethel Hale; siblings, Ruth Hale Garrison, Velma Hale Pancake, Mary Hale Richardson, Dr. Harry Hale and Margaret Hale Williams.
She is survived by her children, Anne Lowder, Susan Clemons, John Jacobs, Richard Jacobs; ten grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, November 16, 2013 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle with Reverend Ken Williamson officiating. Burial will follow in South Mound Cemetery.
