Eugene “Gene” Rains, 91, of New Castle, passed away peacefully at his residence on Tuesday, March 11, 2025. He was born on May 31, 1933, in Windy, Kentucky, the son of the late Charlie and Clova (Beatty) Rains.
Gene was known as a simple family loving and devoted man of faith who read his Bible daily, filling countless notebooks with reflections on the verses he studied. He was a longtime member of Sulphur Springs Christian Church. Above all, Gene cherished his family, especially his granddaughters and great-grandchildren, who were the light of his life. He took great pride in watching his great-granddaughter, Addison, barrel race, whether in person or by video, always offering his expert critiques. He also enjoyed watching PBR bull riding on television.
A proud veteran of the United States Army, Gene later retired from Chrysler Corporation in 1981 following 30 years of dedicated service.
Gene is survived by his beloved wife, Josie Rains of New Castle; children, Scott (Dorothy K.) Rains of Knightstown and Cindy (Mike) Skinner of New Castle; granddaughters, Pamela Griffin of New Castle, Stacy Engle of New Castle, and Mandy Miller of Noblesville; great-grandchildren, Dalton (Emily) Engle of New Castle, Mason Lardon of New Castle, Addison Miller of Middletown, and Isla Miller of Noblesville; and great-great-grandsons, Sullivan Engle and Weston Lardon; siblings, Earl (Joyce) Rains of New Castle, Letha Boils of Albany, Kentucky, and Don (Betty Jo) Rains of Monticello, Kentucky.
In addition to his parents, Gene was preceded in death by his sister, Lois Cross, and his brothers, Ken and Ben Rains.
Services will be held at 2:30pm Monday, March 17, 2025 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle with Pastor CJ Buskirk officiating. Burial will follow in Mt Summit Cemetery. with military honors conducted by the American Legion/VFW and the US Army. Visitation will be from 1:30pm until the time of service on Monday.
