Eugene Thomas “Gene” Johnson, 84, of New Castle, went to be with the Lord on Sunday morning, February 28, 2016. He was born April 14, 1931 in Plummers Landing, Kentucky to the late James and Matilda (Muse) Johnson.
He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict as a member of the 196th Field Artillery and received the Korean Service Medal, District Unit Citation and two Presidential Citations. He retired from Westinghouse/ABB Corporation following 28 years of service. Gene loved the Lord and was a member of the Nazarene Church for 50 years where he served in various positions, including adult Sunday school teacher and superintendent as well as church board member. He was an avid reader and enjoyed camping, but his greatest love was spending time with the family. He could be found on a sunny day whittling “making little ones out of big ones.”
He married his wife of 63 years, Oma (Shelton) on December 13, 1952. They had two sons, Mike (Virginia) Johnson of New Castle and Steve (Debbie) Johnson of Anderson. Also left to cherish his memory are five grandchildren, Jonathan (Brooke) Johnson of Connersville, Jennifer (Jeremy) Fox of New Castle, Julie (Matt) Turner of Pendleton, Brynne Johnson and Brooke Johnson of Anderson; six great grandchildren, Rebecca and Ryan Johnson, Jillian and Jacob Fox and Madelyn and Katelyn Turner; two brothers, James Robert Johnson of Chesterfield and David (Cecely) Johnson of New Castle; one sister, Mary (Charles) Justice of Manilla; several nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, March 3, 2016 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle with Pastors Steve Arnett, Chuck Justice and Rick Shelton officiating. Burial will follow in South Mound Cemetery-West Lawn Addition. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, March 2, 2016 at the funeral home.
