Eugene “Gene Big Daddy” Martin, age 82, of Greensboro, passed away Monday, March 25, 2013 at his home. He was born January 7, 1931 in Pageton, West Virginia to the late Kyle and Virginia Mae (Belcher) Martin.
A veteran of the United States Army, he served during the Korean War. Gene retired from Allison’s Division of General Motors in Indianapolis in 1981 following 30 years of service. He also worked at Pinecrest Golf Course in Avon Park, Florida. He was a member of the Eagle and Moose Lodges, American Legion and VFW. Gene was a two time club champion of the American Legion Golf Course. He was affiliated with the Greensboro Church of the Nazarene. An avid golfer, he also played baseball and enjoyed bowling.
Survivors include his wife of over 60 years, Odessa (Black) Martin; three children, Theresa Sexton of Greensboro, Phillip Eugene (wife, Tammy) Martin of Muncie and Paula Crane of New Castle; seven grandchildren, Joshua and Miles Sexton, Phillip Eugene Martin II, Tabitha Dicks, Derek, Ethan and Chase Crane; ten great grandchildren; one great-great grandson; eight siblings, Aurelia (husband, George) Harmon of West Virginia, Maxine Thomasson of Avon, Kathrine Keaton of Missouri, David (wife, Sue) Martin of Lewisville, Paul (wife, Linda) Martin and Johnnie Martin, both of Florida, Arvil Martin of Columbus, IN and Linda Bowling of Greensboro; several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Bobby and James Martin; sister, Mary Carol Stine; son-in-law, Anthony “Tony” Crane; mother-in-law and father-in-law; David and Anna Black.
Services will be at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, March 28, 2013 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle with Reverend Gene Bennett officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hills Memory Gardens. Friends may call from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Thursday, March 28, 2013 at the funeral home. Military rites will be conducted by the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
