Freda Vitatoe

Freda May (Thurston) Vitatoe, age 91, of New Castle, passed away Sunday, January 03, 2010 at her residence following an extended illness. She was born September 13, 1918 in Jamestown, Kentucky to the late Harrison and Oda (Guffey) Thurston.

Freda worked at Rest Haven Nursing Home in New Castle. She retired after thirty years as a supervisor from the New Castle State Hospital. Growing up, she was in a band with her sisters. She loved gardening, quilting, and playing the banjo and guitar. She has attended several local churches.

Freda is survived by her four children: Ina (husband: Ernest )(Vitatoe) Roberts, Nina (Vitatoe) Dishman, Larry (wife: Mary) Vitatoe, and Helen (Vitatoe) Johnson all of New Castle; grandchildren: Vernon Roberts of Modoc, Gary Roberts of Lakeland, Fl. Stephen Roberts of New Castle, Carolyn (husband: George) Adkins of New Castle, Lisa Caudill, and Nancy (husband: Ted) Cook all of New Castle; Larry Dewayne Vitatoe of Georgia, Brian (wife: Gwyn) Agee of Indianapolis, Sherry (husband: Jeff) Fox, Billy Vitatoe Jr both of Franklin, North Carolina; a sister: Ruby Beck of Indianapolis; twelve great grandchildren; four great great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband: William Vitatoe; a son: Billy Vitatoe; a grandson: Michael Dishman; sisters: Loma McCall and Dortha Dishman; two sons in law: James Dishman and Bill Johnson; and two great granddaughters.

Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, January 7, 2010 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle with Reverend David Perry officiating. Burial will follow in South Mound Cemetery, West Lawn Addition. Friends may call from 4 – 8 p.m. Wednesday, January 6, 2010 at the funeral home.
