Frederick A. Hellmer, age 93, passed away Monday, November 7, 2016 at IU Ball Hospital in Muncie. He was born July 8, 1923 in Indianapolis, Indiana the son of Raymond John and Freda Marion (Richter) Hellmer.
His family moved to New Castle, Indiana. Fred graduated from New Castle High School with the class of 1941, where he served as Class Treasurer. Growing up, Fred enjoyed playing basketball, baseball, and bowling and was also an avid history reader.
After graduating from high school, Fred served a six-year apprentice to become a Journeyman Drop Forge Die-Sinker at Interstate Machine and Engineering in Albany, Indiana. He then returned to New Castle and was employed at the Chrysler Forge division as a supervisor in Drop Forge Die division. After retirement from Chrysler Corporation in 1980, he worked for South Bend Forge, Toledo Impression, Industrial Machine and Die Moline in Ohio.
Fred served in the United States Army at Fort Benning, Georgia and in 1949 married Eva Kalk of New Castle in Columbus, Georgia.
He was a member of the Muncie Elks and charter member of the Muncie Catalina Swim Club. Passing an entrance exam at the age of 76, he was admitted to the American Mensa Society. Fred had also attended Ball State University and The University of Georgia. Fred and his wife Eva loved ball room dancing and traveling.
Fred leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Eva of 67 years; two children, Frederick Hellmer, Jr. of Muncie and Susan (Martin) Peters of Roanoke, IN; two grandchildren, Brennan Peters of Los Angeles, CA and Kenlyn Peters of Ithaca, NY; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother and two sisters.
At Fred’s request, there will be no public services. A private graveside service will be held at South Mound Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be given to the Marion VA Hospital, VA Northern Indiana Health Care System, Attn: Voluntary Service 135-M, 1700 E. 38th St. Marion, IN 46953.
