Gary J. Gard, of Mooreland passed away Sunday, January 14, 2018 at Henry Community Health. He was born June 13, 1935 in Mooreland to the late Kenneth E. “Shorty” and Cathleen (Murray) Gard.
A graduate of Mooreland High School, Gary retired from Borg-Warner in Muncie after 34 years of service, and also retired from Walmart in New Castle after 14 years of service. He served on the Mooreland Volunteer Fire Department for 41 years, where he served as chief for 6 years. He was also a member of the Mooreland Friends Meeting. Bowling and fishing, especially with his son, Scott, were two hobbies he especially enjoyed.
Gary was a fixture at the Mooreland Free Fair, serving on the Mooreland Fair Board for 46 years (1971- present). Gary and Bill Patterson founded the Red Hot Rhythm Band, who always drew a large crowd at the Mooreland Fair during their performances.
He is survived by a son, Scott (Tammy) Gard of Mooreland; grandsons; Jeremy (Tiffany) Gard of Albany and Justin (Lauren) Gard of New Palestine; great-grandson, Vincent Scott Gard, brother, Gerald “Buck” (Betty) Gard of New Castle; sisters-in-law, Marjorie Shelton of New Castle, Marlene (Ray) Sexton of Lake Placid, FL, and Jacque Gard of Mooreland; brother-in-law, Cecil Cooper of New Castle, several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Thelma “Darlene” Gard, son, Alan Gard, daughter, Nikki Gard, brothers, Kenneth Eugene “Gene” Gard and George P. “Muscles” Gard Sr., sister, Carolyn Sue Cooper.
Services will be at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 20, 2018 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle with Brenda Early officiating. Burial will follow in Mooreland Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 – 8 p.m. Friday, January 19th at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be sent to the Mooreland Fire Dept., P.O. Box 209, Mooreland, IN 47360.
