General Blaine Hurst, age 86, of Bowling Green, Kentucky, and formerly of New Castle, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, April 28, 2013 in The Medical Center in Bowling Green, KY. He was born June 28, 1926 in Jamestown, TN, a son of the late James Blaine and Lady Wytia (Stinson) Hurst.
A U.S. Army combat veteran in World War II, he served in the South Pacific Theater. He was a recipient of several military awards and recognitions, including Asiatic-Pacific Theater ribbon, Philippine Independence ribbon, Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Army of Occupation Medal-Japan. He also served for an undisclosed time as an under cover police officer for the U.S. Military. He moved to Springfield, Ohio where he lived and worked before entering the Army. When he left the Army, at the end of the mission, he then moved to New Castle, Indiana. General worked at Chevrolet Transmission (General Motors) in Muncie for 9 ½ years, and then retired from the state of Indiana, following over 24 years of service as foreman electrician in the Maintenance Department at the New Castle State Hospital, retiring in 1988.
He was a member of the Foursquare Gospel Church in New Castle. He was active in all aspects of the church life, especially in the Sunday School Department, teaching from 4th grade through high school classes. He was also active as a Boy Scout leader. As a great electrician, he was always ready to help those in need of his service.
He is survived by two sons, Blaine E. (Becky) Hurst of Boston, MA, and Blake L. Hurst of New Castle; one grandson, David Hurst of Boston, MA; two brothers, Clell Hurst of southern Indiana, and Larry (Edalene) Hurst of Albany, KY; three sisters, Elizabeth (Chuck) Livermore of Angola, IN, Faye Everly and Sherry Herley, both of Akron, OH; and many wonderful nieces and nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his step-mother, Gladys Smith (Padgett) Hurst; four sisters, Alma Hooten, Ellen Stancel, Myrt Catron, and Vina Pryor; six brothers, Arnold, Elmo, Loren, Noble, Billy, and Johnny Hurst.
Services will be at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, May 2, 2013 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service with Reverend Lane Fairchild and Reverend Robin Massengale Washburn officiating. Burial will follow in South Mound Cemetery. Friends may call from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
