George H. Shafer, 81, of Carthage, passed away Saturday, April 2, 2011 at Flat Rock River Lodge in Rushville following an extended illness. He was born March 11, 1930 in Indianapolis, a son of the late Clarence L. and Mattie M. (Buckheister) Shafer.
A 1948 graduate of Southport High School, George retired from Eli Lilly in 1993 after 30 years of employment as an electrician. He was a member of the Knightstown Friends Church. An avid woodworker, he also enjoyed hunting, fishing and reading books.
He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 60 years, Shirley A. (Ferguson) Shafer of Carthage; three daughters, Pamela (husband, Ronald) Helms of Pimento, Peggy (husband, Wade) Beatty of Knightstown, and Penny (husband, Darrell) Weidner of Carthage; a granddaughter, Carla (husband, Joshua) Counceller of Columbus, OH; three brothers, Jerry (wife, Kathy) Shafer of St. Louis, MO, Eddie (wife, Pauletta) Shafer of Clarkesville, TN, Tony Shafer of Atlanta, GA; a sister-in-law, Maxine Shafer of Indianapolis; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a grandson, Adam Beatty and two brothers, John Shafer and Michael Shafer.
Services will be at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 5, 2011 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service Knightstown Chapel with Tim Basford officiating. Burial will follow in Glen Cove Cemetery. Friends may call from 12-2 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home prior to the service.
