George Smiley

George R. Smiley, 88, passed away Tuesday, July 6, 2010 at the Woodlands in New Castle. He was born in Spiceland on November 5, 1921, the son of Clarence and Emma E. (Poer) Smiley in the home of his grandparents, Otho and Alta Poer.
A 1940 graduate of Mays High School, he was reared in Rush County on the family farm. He married Virginia L. Charles-Bell on June 13, 1943 at Ben Davis Christian Church in Rush County. He farmed for many years in Rush County and also in the Kennard area. He also drove a school bus for Kennard and Knightstown schools and retired from Draper Shade and Screen after 24 years of service, retiring to the family farm.
George was a past member of the Spiceland Lions Club, served on the Spiceland Town Board, and held offices in Henry County Farm Bureau. He was also a member of the Center Christian Church near Mays and had been a resident of the Woodlands in New Castle for the past five years; and George’s family would like to recognize all the wonderful caregivers who helped George in his last years.
Survivors include three children, Brenda J. (husband, Randy) Maloyed of rural New Castle, John C. Smiley of Rogers, AR and Mark T. Smiley of Indianapolis; seven grandchildren, Jonathan D. (wife, Gretchen) Maloyed, Jack A. Maloyed, Reid (wife, Alison) Smiley, Jill (husband, Jason) Craven, Jesse Smiley, Stephanie Smiley and Sarah Smiley; ten great grandchildren, John Ross Maloyed, Emma Marie Maloyed, Troy Craven, Morgan Craven, Claire Smiley, Luke Smiley, Brandon Kendall, Emma Grace Fessler, Logan Simmons and Alyssa Smiley.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Virginia; a sister, Madalene Smiley and infant sister Betty Smiley; granddaughter, Melissa Smiley.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 10, 2010 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service Knightstown Chapel. Burial will follow in Center Cemetery. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Friday, July 9, 2010 at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be given to the Center Christian Church, 9112 N. 50 W., Knightstown, IN 46148, with envelopes available at the funeral home.
