Harold Huffman

Harold D. Huffman Jr., 58, of New Castle, passed away Tuesday, April 28, 2009 in Indiana University Medical Center while surrounded by his family, following an extended illness. He was born May 19, 1950 in New Castle, a son of Harold D. and Onley (Fairchild) Huffman Sr.

A 1968 graduate of New Castle Chrysler High School, he received a full scholarship for football and baseball from Butler University and received his bachelor’s degree from there in 1972. He later received his Master’s degree in Education from Ball State University. He was a draft pick for the Pittsburgh Pirates and attended training camp there. He returned to teach and coach wrestling and football for Shenandoah High School from 1974 to 1978. He then came to New Castle Chrysler High School to teach and coach, where he coached football and baseball from 1978 to 1993, and where he presently remains on staff.

Affectionately called “Huff”, he was proud of his students and helped twenty of them succeed to college baseball scholarships. During his coaching career, he won six sectionals, coached twenty-two All North Central Conference Players, three All-Star Players, was a Top Ten pollster for High School Baseball and a USA Top 25 Pollster. A member of the Indiana High School Baseball Coaches Association and was their regional representative for three years. He served on the All Star Selection Committee and the National Scholarship Committee. A longtime member of the Breakfast Optimist Club, he had also served as president of the Babe Ruth Baseball League.

He is survived by his father, Harold D. Huffman Sr. of New Castle; a sister, Dianna Wallace (husband, Dennis Little) of New Castle; a brother, John (wife, Stacy) Huffman of Dunreith,; a niece, Shelby Huffman; two nephews, Layne Huffman and Dusty Little; eight aunts, Ollie (husband, Bill) Lee, Catherine Watkins, June (husband, Dave) Fairchild, Hazel Huffman, all of New Castle, Anitajean Huffman of Anderson, Martha Fairchild and Jeannie Fairchild both of Spiceland, Mary Fairchild; four uncles, Hershel (wife, Donna) Fairchild of New Castle, Wallace (wife, Irene) Fairchild of Spiceland, Dave (wife, June) Fairchild of New Castle, and Dewey (wife, Martha) Fairchild of Lewisville, and several cousins.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Onley (Fairchild) Huffman and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 2, 2009 at First Baptist Church with the Reverends Dennis Hilton and Bobby Slagle officiating. Burial will follow at Batson Cemetery. Friends may call from 3-8 p.m. Friday, May 1, 2009 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle. Memorial contributions may be given to the Harold D.
