Harold W. "Bus" Mitchell

April 23, 1924 — September 27, 2012

Harold W. “Bus” Mitchell, 88, of New Castle, passed away Thursday, September 27, 2012 at his residence. He was born April 23, 1924 in Oolitic, Indiana to the late Harry and Lillie (Lenox) Mitchell.

A 1942 graduate of New Castle High School, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps in World War II from 1942-1946. Obtaining rank of Corporal, he served in the Asiatic-Pacific, received the Good Conduct Medal and Purple Heart, and also received three battle stars, one of them from the battle of Guam, in which he was wounded.

“Bus” retired from Chrysler Corporation in New Castle following 43 years of service, where he worked in the forge plant. A Scout Master for over 20 years, he was awarded a medal by the American Legion for his work with the Scouts. He was also a member of the Greensboro Masonic Lodge, and an honorary member of the New Castle Masonic Lodge. A member of the Sulphur Springs Lion’s Club, he had served as president. He loved to fish, loved gardening, traveling, and enjoyed building, as he built the family home where he raised his family.

He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of over 63 years, Wilma (Wickliff) Mitchell of New Castle; two sons, Wayne E. (wife, Maria) Mitchell of St. Louis, MO and Steven R. (wife, Kim) Mitchell of Murfreesboro, TN; four grandchildren, Andrea Mitchell of St. Louis, Emily Mitchell of Chattanooga, TN, David Mitchell of New Castle and Melissa (husband, Zack) Austin of Spring Hill, TN; two sisters, Mary Mitchell of Mazon, IL, and Joanne Riley of Shelbyville, a brother, Carroll Mitchell of Indianapolis; several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Paul Mitchell in 1996.

Services will be at10:30 a.m. Monday, October 1, 2012 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle with Reverend Mark Lomison officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hills Memory Gardens where military rites will be conducted by a contingent from the U. S. Marine Corps. Friends may call from 3-7 p.m. Sunday, September 30, 2012 at the funeral home with a Masonic Service at 7:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be given to the Alzhiemers Research, 635 Barnhill Drive, Indianapolis, IN 46202-5120 with envelopes available at the funeral home.
