Harriett E. Grunden, 91, of New Castle, passed away Wednesday, December 7, 2011 at Arbor Grove Village in Greensburg, following a brief illness. She was born November 25, 1920 in New Castle, a daughter of the late Gus and Louise (Alexander) Byers.
A 1938 graduate of New Castle High School, Harriett lived most of her life in New Castle, where she was a sales clerk at Montgomery Ward, and also in Kendallville, IN.
Survivors include two daughters, Rebecca (husband, Brian) Pinto of Columbus, and Darrelle Whiteman of New Castle; two granddaughters, Cindy (husband, John) Smith of Richmond and Kelley (husband, Dan) Keesling of Middletown; three grandsons, Allen “Walt” (wife, Mary) Whiteman of Carmel, Troy (wife, Nadine) and Pat Whiteman, both of WI; a cousin, Don (wife, Lea) Ulmer; two great grandsons, Ryan Smith and Scott (wife, Angela) Smith; five great granddaughters, Terri Keesling, Witney, (Chris) Whiteman, Anna and Amy Whiteman, and Rebekah Whiteman; a great-great granddaughter, Makinzie; two great-great grandsons, Cooper and Kodah.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Grunden.
Graveside services will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday, December 9, 2011 at South Mound Cemetery with the Reverend Tom McGilliard officiating. There will be no public calling hours. Online condolences may be expressed at
