Helen E. (Strother) Dorn, 87, of New Castle, passed away Saturday, August 4, 2012 in Heritage House Rehabilitation Center. She was born November 2, 1924 in Henry County, a daughter of the late Carl B. and Louise (McDonald) Strother.
A graduate of New Castle High School, she attended Indiana Business School in Indianapolis. Helen was the Executive Director of the Mental Health Association of Henry County for several years, retiring in 1989. She was awarded volunteer of the year and was one of only two award winners of the Family Member Recognition Award for outstanding support to Alzheimer’s patients and family members. She previously worked at the Blountsville elevator, Ingersoll Steel and the former Frank’s Furniture. A member of the First Christian Church in Mooreland, Helen was also a member of the Mooreland Extension Homemakers Club. She had also been active with leading the Caring Friends Alzheimer’s Support Group. Helen also belonged to the RSVP as well as the Gingham Pals Homemakers. She enjoyed painting, sewing, gardening and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She leaves to cherish her memory, three daughters, Carolyn E. (husband, Daniel) Knight of Marlinton, WV, Deborah K. (husband, Gregory) Durst of Indianapolis, and Jonni L. (husband, David) Lumpkin of Mooreland; four grandchildren, Amber Lumpkin of Mooreland, Ashley (husband: Steve) Owens of Livingston, TN, Allison Durst of Venray, Netherlands and Benjamin Durst of Indianapolis; four great grandchildren: David Scott Christie of Mooreland, Devon, Haley and Gavin Owens, all of Livingston, TN.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John P. Dorn, and two brothers, Donald and Paul Strother.
Services will be at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 7, 2012 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle. Burial will follow in Miller Cemetery in Middletown.
