Horace P. Himes

Horace P. Himes, age 98 of New Castle, passed away Tuesday, August 2, 2016 at Stonebrooke Rehabilitation Center. He was born May 4, 1918 to the late Paul R. and Rebecca (Gibson) Himes.

When you describe a “gentleman”, you describe Horace. He came to know the Lord at the age of 98. He was a graduate of New Castle High School in 1936. He enjoyed working with youth being an Eagle Scout and Scout Master, Red Cross First Aid instructor, president of Junior Achievement and the past president of Westwood Country Club. He served two terms on the Henry Township Advisory Board and served as a staff sergeant with the 91st Military Government in Japan. He retired in 1977 as superintendent with Chrysler Corporation. He assumed ownership of his father’s cabinet shop “The Work Bench” in 1977. Horace was a member of the First United Methodist Church serving as a trustee several terms. He enjoyed fishing, golf and playing bridge.

He married Helen Hudson in 1938 and is survived by a son, Stephen Bruce (Laurel) Himes of New Castle; a daughter, Judith (Mendon) Conley of New Castle; four grandchildren, Steve (Denise) Himes of Lutz, FL, Kerri (Francisco) Herandez of White, GA, Cody Himes of New Castle and Heather Himes of Colorado; seven great grandchildren; four step grandchildren; seven step great grandchildren; eight step great-great grandchildren a sister, Mary Lou Hufford of New Castle; sisters-in-law, Helen Hudson of Colorado and Linda Himes of FL; brother-in-law, Dr. Ted Kirby of Greenfield.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 74 years, Helen H. Himes in 2013; a sister, Martha Shafer; a brother, Jerry Himes; step grandson, Stephen Conley; sister-in-law, Ida Kirby; three brothers-in-law, John Hudson, Jim Shafer and Dick Hufford.

Private Graveside Services will be held at a later date at South Mound Cemetery-West Lawn Addition. There will be no public calling hours. Arrangements have been entrusted to Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle. Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 1324 Church St., New Castle, IN 47362.
