Hugh J McGinnis

August 24, 1921 — August 30, 2015

Hugh J. McGinnis, age 94, of New Castle entered eternal life Sunday, August 30, 2015. He was born August 24, 1921 in Spiceland, Indiana the son of Charles and Ruth E. McGinnis.

He was a 1939 graduate of Spiceland High School. As a WWII Air Force veteran, he served as a crew chief with the P-47 group, which provided top cover for the D Day invasion; earning them the Presidential Unit Citation. He retired from Ingersoll Steel after 38 years of service. A resident of Kennard for 35 years, he then moved to New Castle. He was awarded the President’s Volunteer Service Award, from the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation, for his endless hours of free tax preparations as an AARP Tax-Aide. He was a Kennard Cub Scout Leader for many years. He provided various church roles over the years including Sunday School Superintendent for Kennard Friends Church and later as head usher at the New Castle Friends Church until his health no longer permitted. He was a proud member of the Spiceland Friends Church, where he grew up as a child. He enjoyed woodworking, crossword puzzles, flower gardening and calling BINGO at Raintree Square.

Survivors include a sister, Bernetha Baumgarner of Glendora, CA; three daughters, Darlene (Gerald) Darling of Knightstown, Catherine (Phillip) Roth of Battle Creek, MI and Carmelle (Max) Jordan of Kennard; daughter-in-law, Patty McGinnis of Savannah, GA; thirteen grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Mae Hagerman; son, Roy McGinnis and his beloved wife of 56 years, Charlotte McGinnis.

Services will be at 12:00 p.m. Thursday, September 3, 2015 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle with David Brock, Eric Roth, Brian Roth and Justin Darling officiating. Burial will follow in South Mound Cemetery-West Lawn Addition. Friends may call from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Military rites will be conducted by a contingent from the United States Air Force. Memorial contributions may be given to the Spiceland Friends Meeting, PO Box 27, Spiceland, IN 47385.
