Jama M. Smitherman

Jama M. Smitherman, 77, a lifelong resident of New Castle passed away Friday, May 10, 2024 at IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital. She was born February 9, 1947 in New Castle to the late Chester and Stella Prince.

A 1965 graduate of Walter P. Chrysler High School in New Castle, she worked at Chrysler Corp for several years. Jama then worked a full career and retired from the Head Start Program through ICAP. Jama enjoyed birdwatching, flowers, and had a great love for dogs; especially her beloved dog Jake.  

Survivors include three sons: Chris (wife Lisa) Hay of Aurora, IL, Shane Hay of New Castle, and Matthew Smitherman (wife Sandra Ortono) of Middleburg Heights, OH, and three grandsons: Connor, Josiah, and Kavan Hay (Shane’s boys).

A Celebration of Life for Jama will be held from 12:00-2:00 P.M. Saturday, May 18, 2024 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle.
