James R. Cannon, 85, of New Castle, passed away Thursday, December 11, 2008 at his home following a lengthy illness. He was born October 22, 1923 in New Castle the son of Harold and Julia Cannon.
He is remembered for his artistic talent, infectious sense of humor and his deep love of family. Jim served in World War II in the U.S. Army in Columbus, New Mexico on Border Patrol, later in the Pacific Theater, and as part of the Army of Occupation in Japan. After his discharge from the Army he worked in advertising at the Courier-Times and as a commercial artist in Muncie. He retired from “Muncie Power†in 1989. He continued to work part-time as an antique dealer and most recently as a cartoonist for “Antique Week†publication.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years: Marcella (Sally) Cannon of New Castle; a sister: Jean Cannon of New Castle; a daughter: Sandra Cannon-Brown (husband: Omer) of Washington, DC; a son: Ronald (wife: Janet) Cannon of Rockville, IN; two grandchildren: Shane (wife: Sommer) Cannon of Springport, IN and Veronica (husband: Kevin) Collins of Pendleton, IN; two great grandchildren: Dillon and Kylie Cannon of Springport, IN.
Service will be at 1:00 PM, Sunday, December 14, 2008 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle with Rev. Janet Richardson officiating. Burial will follow in St. Anne Cemetery. Friends may call from 4:00-6:00 PM Saturday, December 13, 2008 at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Disabled Veterans with envelopes available at the funeral home.
