Local Legend, James Edward Fleming, 84, a loving father, and devoted partner was reunited with family and friends on Thursday, April 10, 2025 following a brief illness. A man of deep character, quick wit, and unforgettable charm, he was well loved by all who knew him.
James was born on June 11, 1940 in New Castle to the late Gerald and Zelma (Lushell) Fleming. A proud Army veteran of the Vietnam War Era, he served his country with honor and pride. After his service, he built a long and steady career at Chrysler, retiring in 2001 after 29 dedicated years. In 2018, he experienced what he often called “the best time of his life” when he took part in the Indy Honor Flight, a trip that meant the world to him. He was also a member of the First Church of the Nazarene.
Known to many by “Jim”, and his nickname “Blue Moon”, he was wonderfully eccentric, never afraid to speak his mind, and always wearing his heart-and his favorite team colors-on his sleeve. Whether it was the Dallas Cowboys, the Cincinnati Reds, or Indiana University, his loyalty ran deep and you could always count on him to be sporting their gear proudly. He was a fixture for years at New Castle sporting events, especially boys’ basketball.
Even in retirement, he was always on the move. Before his illness, you could find him walking the aisles of Walmart or traveling with his beloved partner, DeeAnn Douglas, visiting restaurants, antique stores and taking in the sights and enjoying the little things in life.
He is survived by his three sons; Jeff (Angel) Fleming of Westfield, Jay (Kevin) Fleming of Indianapolis and Jody (Leslie) Fleming of New Castle; his partner DeeAnn Douglas of New Castle. His Legacy continues through his 7 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren, each of whom he loved dearly.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two siblings, Richard Fleming and Doris Sexton.
He lived life fully, loved deeply and brought joy and laughter wherever he went. He will be missed more than words can express.
Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 16, 2025 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle with Rev. Loral Tansey and Rev. Jimmy Southerland officiating. Burial will follow at South Mound Cemetery, West Lawn Addition. Military rites will be provided by contingents of the U.S. Army, American Legion and the VFW. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 15 at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service on Wednesday. In Lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Heart-to-Heart Hospice, 2701 W. Jackson St., Muncie, IN 47303.
