James S. Hughes, 95, of New Castle died Thursday, March 31, 2011 at Henry County Hospital in New Castle. He was born February 29, 1916 in McCreary County, Kentucky, a son of the late Litton and Polly Jane (Tucker) Hughes.
A longtime resident of New Castle, he retired from Chrysler Corporation in 1979 after 32 years of service. He served in the Army during World War II in the 128th Anti-Aircraft Division. He was a long time member of Freedom Baptist Church (formerly Immanuel Baptist Church).
Survivors include four grandchildren: Brian (wife, Jeri) Hughes of Shelbyville, Krista Hughes of Franklin, Rochelle (husband, Fred) Sudler of Indianapolis and David Hughes of Shelbyville; great grandchildren: Ethan Hughes, Austin & Alyssa Zell, Kiley Copple, Anna & Jamison Sudler, and Amara & Grace Hughes; one sister: Pauline McPheron of Merrillville; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife: Ilene Hughes in 2006; a son: Larry Joseph Hughes in 1995; three sisters: Lorraine Nichols, Beulah Floyd and Cloa New; and three brothers: Richmond Hughes, Ralph Hughes and Marvin T. Hughes.
Services will be 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 6, 2011 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle with Pastor Rod Harmon officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hills Memory Gardens.
