James “Jim” Ralph Pickering, 70, of Spiceland, passed away Friday, November 4, 2016 at The Waters of New Castle. He was born February 13, 1946 in Hollywood, CA to the Reverend Kenneth Ralph and Ruthanna (Leamon) Pickering.
He was a 1963 graduate of Spiceland High School. An auctioneer for 35 years, Jim was very involved in Henry County 4-H and FFA, where he served as their auctioneer for over 25 years. A birthright Quaker, he was a member of Spiceland Friends Meeting, where he had sang in church since the age of 2. He was also a member of the Indiana Auctioneer Association, Spiceland Lions Club and New Castle Masonic Lodge. Jim worked in the lumber business in New Castle and Florida. He also worked in real estate and owned an antique mall in New Castle and Ft. Lauderdale, FL.
He is survived by four children, Mike Owens of Winchester, Susan (Dennis) Stamper of Cambridge City, Lisa (Rick) Little of Spiceland and Amy (Stacy) Pickering-McNulty-Lowe of Tucker, GA; 11 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; a sister, Joyce (David) Holden of Ontario, Canada; two cousins, Richard (Linda) Ratcliff of Spiceland and Thomas (Kay) Ratcliff of Dunreith; a niece, Jayne Cabigas of Tampa, FL; a nephew, Kirk Mardock of Elk Ridge, MD; his canine companion, Dexter.
He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant brother, David Pickering.
Visitation will be from 2 to 8 PM Wednesday, November 9, 2016 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle. The funeral service will be at 10:00 AM Thursday at Spiceland Friends Meeting with David Brock officiating. Burial will follow Circle Grove Cemetery.
