James E. “Jay” Hancock, 92 of Wilkinson died unexpectedly Tuesday, July 16, 2013 at St. Vincent Heart Center in Indianapolis. He was born October 24, 1920 in Sunnybrook, Kentucky to the late George and Maggie Ellen (Hicks) Hancock.
A member of the UAW he retired from the Chrysler Corporation after 31 years of service. Jay was a veteran of the United States Army and served as a combat medic in multiple theatres during World War II. He was a widely known horseman and enjoyed sharing his abilities with all generations of people. He also led wagon trains to Brown County State Park for over 15 years. He was a member of Mt. Zion Wesleyan church, which he helped build, the Indiana Mule Pullers Association and the Indiana Cornhusker Association. Jay enjoyed plowing the fields and spending time as a woodsman.
Survivors include his wife: Eileen Hancock of Wilkinson; five children: Tina Laymance of Monticello, Kentucky; Jerry (wife: Joyce) Hancock of Huntingburg; James E. Jr. (wife: Lisa) Hancock of Monticello, Kentucky; Kim Byers of Knightstown, and Melanie (husband: Michael) Craft of Shirley; eleven grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; four stepchildren and several step-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife: Anna Mae (Sidwell) Hancock; six brothers: Robert, Newell, Loren, Clemon, Dexter and Eldon Hancock; five sisters: Gertie Denney, Hattie Peavie, Ruby Rains, Glenna Catron, Coza Turner.
Services will be at 11AM Saturday, July 20, 2013 at Mt. Zion Wesleyan Church in New Castle with the Revs. Steve Arnett and Dan Jones officiating. Burial will follow at Green Hills Memory Gardens. Military rites will be conducted by the American Legion-VFW and an active duty contingent of the U.S. Army. Friends may call from 4-8 PM Friday at the church and one hour prior to the service.
